Do People Really Hate Themselves That Much?

It is no surprise to anyone that we have a health crisis happening right before our eyes. And I saw this first hand during a recent trip to a popular vacation destination.

Before I get into it, at the end of this post will be the start to Week 2 of my Health Reset Challenge. Week one had five simple tasks to create awareness of what we eat and how we eat. There is still time to join and you can do that below..

My husband and I took a little trip down to a very popular vacation spot in south Texas along the Gulf of America. Our plan was to enjoy the sun, sand and fresh seafood. But what we found was very eye opening and explained so much about the health crisis our society is embattled with.

Families, young and old, come to this area to enjoy themselves at the beach. But there was something glaring at me as my husband and I walked along the beach and through this beach town. We saw a high percentage of people who were overweight and obese and some that were well on their way to get there. People sat on the beach with their tables full of sugar laden drinks, bags of snack ultra processed foods that were high is seed oils and artificial flavors and colors.

As we walked by a midlife woman along the beach, who was noticeably overweight, bordering on obese, she grabbed her can of soda as she light up a cigarette, standing over her table with an assortment of ‘snacks’. That was when my husband said to me “do people really hate themselves that much, to continue to eat crap, drink crap and smoke, knowing that it is killing them?” (Yes, I have taught my husband well)

Well that is a great question. Do they know and don’t care? Maybe they don’t know. Do they not know how it is to feel healthy? Maybe it isn’t that they hate themselves but that they don’t know what normal is. And normal to them is what society has told them..I have lots of questions and not a lot of answers. And I have sadness.

And then there was the restaurants…Of course being by the ocean, we were looking forward to a meal or 2 of fresh seafood. But what we found was all the fresh ingredients we were craving were FRIED. Fried fish, friend shrimp, fried oysters..and you can bet they were all fried in seed oils that most likely had some cleaning and anti foaming agent for maximum oil usage. And people were lining up for this food 3 meals a day. And there was also the quick, high sugar laden breakfast options to get you up and going in the morning.

Lucky enough after walking around for a time, we managed to find a place that provided us with a refreshing ceviche and pan grilled fish..and we enjoyed a margarita.

Disclaimer: I am a realist and I also do partake in a few ‘unhealthy’ choices every know and then. But I also am at a point in my life and with my health that a few times a year will not put my body into an unhealthy position. But I will tell you, I can definitely tell and my body is aware when I do make these choices and I do not like the way I feel afterwards..fatigued, sluggish, face breakouts..my body knows.

What is Normal?

It is normal to be pre-diabetic/diabetic, normal to have high blood pressure, normal to be tired all the time, normal to ‘overweight’. Our world has told us you are normal and here is a pill or 2 or 5 to help you feel better. Our health care system has affirmed these symptoms and their solution for it is pills or shots or surgeries.

What I Know

It is time to change what normal is. It is time for people to stop hating themselves. It is time for all those big food companies to stop with the gaslighting new releases that they are going to make changes to their products in 2 years and do it now.

But most of all it is time to educate people on what they are putting in their bodies. It is time to help people realize what feeling normal is.
