The dietary supplement market worldwide is estimated to be worth 193.7 BILLION in 2024 and is expected grow at a rate of 9% each year after. That is a lot of supplements. This includes vitamins, minerals, botanicals (herbs), protein powders & amino acids, fibre, probiotics, prebiotics, omega fatty acids.
We are becoming more health conscious and are looking for other options than pharmaceuticals. With all this inventory and the growth, how will we know what is good for us? What is the quality? And are these supplements actually helping our health or are we just throwing good money after bad. We need to do our homework and research products and quality that you think may give your best results.

Well, there is a relatively new supplement on the market, that is getting some good traction. It may be a new supplement but this is something that mammals have been ingesting for, well, forever. Colostrum. Otherwise known as ‘first milk’ or ‘liquid gold’.
What is Colostrum?
Colostrum is the first milk that is produced in the female mammary glands of humans and other animals (such as cows, goats, etc.) just before birth or within the first days of birth. It is a concentrated thin milk full of proteins, enzymes, antibodies, growth and immune factors that the newborn babies require.
WOW! Isn’t nature amazing! Our bodies are so incredible and intuitive of what the early requirements of life are.
Colostrum is very easily digestible and is full of nutrients that our bodies require.
Cytokines - immune system hormones
Growth factors - for growth of body tissues, muscles and gut lining
Lactoferrin - for iron absorption and immunity
Growth hormone
Immunoglobins - proteins for our immune system
PRP (proline rich polypeptides) -proteins that support the growth of white blood cells to restore the balance of the immune system and support brain health.
It is very clear that colostrum is very important to our growth and health of the body, human and animal. So why not take this substance and create a dietary supplement to take daily that will provide many health benefits.
Colostrum has revered for years across many cultures. Ancient Chinese used it as a potent health tonic. Certain tribes of Kenya and Tanzania use it as a crucial element in their warrior’s diet and dairy farmers in Britain refer to it as beesting’ and use it in a rich and creamy healthy pudding.
Benefits of Colostrum
In the natural supplement realm, we are seeing a surge of colostrum products on the market (mainly bovine colostrum but you can also get goat colostrum) to provide us with support to our health and to help certain deficiencies.
Colostrum has been shown to:
Support our immune systems, reduce allergy symptoms
Enhance athletic performance and recovery
Benefits and rebuilds gut health
Growth and muscle building
Anti-aging
Provide neurotrophic factor to support your brain health
Colostrum as an Antibiotic?
Being that colostrum is high in natural immunoglobins, prior to the invention of antibiotics, colostrum was used to help fight infections. But when antibiotics came on the scene, colostrum use declined. Although, there have been new studies using colostrum for antibiotic resistant pathogens.
There are currently ongoing studies using colostrum in treating patients with acute respiratory syndrome caused by SARS-CoV-2
Quality Matters, Always
Sourcing colostrum is very important, as it is will all supplements that you take.
Look for minimally processed and non-denatured colostrum as this helps to preserve the active ingredients and maintain the full benefit. Colostrum that is sourced from grass fed cows, free from GMO feed, hormone free, antibiotic free and BSE ( Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) free. Make sure your colostrum is in a bioactive powder form, not capsules. Colostrum is shown to be best absorbed through oral mucosal surface of the mouth. They best way to take this supplement is to put the powder directly into your mouth and let your saliva interact with it, much like newborns do when breastfeeding.
I use a company call KION for protein powder, amino acids and creatine as I believe in their quality and integrity as a company. They also have colostrum. (This is not an affiliate link, I just like the product)
I will have to be honest, I have never really looked into this supplement this deeply before and now that I have, I can honestly say, I will be purchasing this for myself and adding it to my routine. I do not take a lot of supplements anymore as I have come to realize that when feeding out bodies properly, we can get what we need. But there are times when certain issues arise and we need some extra help healing. And now I will have the benefit of colostrum in my toolbox.
